Baykeepers: From Harvest to Habitat

This photo series documents the vital and evolving role of Chesapeake Bay watermen—those who make their living from the Bay and those who now help protect it. Baykeepers: From Harvest to Habitat captures both the rugged, time-honored tradition of harvesting oysters, crabs, etc. and the growing efforts by watermen to restore and sustain the Bay's health. From the quiet resilience of oyster diving at sunrise to collaborative conservation work with environmental organizations, these images portray the Chesapeake as a living, working body of water shaped by the people who depend on it—and who are stepping up to defend its future. This project honors not only the work, but the stewardship and pride of those who know the Bay best.
